Antioxidants

How exactly do anti-oxidants benefit our bodies?

We always hear how seaweed is packed full of antioxidants. Well, how does that benefit our bodies?

The answer lies in free radicals. Free radicals are known as unstable atoms. They are highly chemically reactive. They cause damage to other cells by robbing electrons. Usually our bodies can deal withfree radicals until they reach excessive numbers.

An excessive build up of free radicals causes a hungry chain reaction of damage. They are usually created internally (by product of normal metabolism), or externally (air pollutants).

Enter the antioxidant. Antioxidants help to repair cells by surrendering electrons anddestroying free radicals. Research shows that by including a diet rich in antioxidants, you will be less likely to get certain diseases.

So whenever an opportunity arises to nibble on some seaweed...go for it. Most seaweeds are edible but some actually taste wonderful. A lot however do not taste so wonderful. Always do research before you forage or harvest though, just to be safe. And always always, forage responsibly.
